The Consequences of Teeth Grinding

Bruxism is the habit of grinding, clenching, or gnashing your teeth. It affects a third of adults during their day. However, it becomes worse in sleep. One in 10 people find they have this problem while sleeping but just can’t seem to escape from this nightmare that won’t go away. Thankfully, a nightguard can at least help alleviate this pain while you’re sleeping.

Sometimes you have no idea why your jaws are clenched. You may end up tossing and turning, all night long, in an obsessive groove, trying to find relief from these awful toothaches every time you clench your jaw muscles together. If it’s not treated with a nightguard for bruxism, this can be detrimental. For example, you could have constant headaches with pain pulsing through your temples, which will worsen over time.

Why Do People Grind Their Teeth?

Stress, worry, and even focus can sometimes be the cause of daytime clenching. Nighttime grinding is often related to hyperactivity or sleep apnea, but it may also have to do with acid reflux from your stomach that seeps into your throat overnight.

Cigarettes or chewing gum are common triggers for teeth-grinding due to their stimulant effect on the nervous system. Caffeine found in soda drinks gives us an energy boost at times when we need it most (like if you’re trying to concentrate) and can also become a cause for grinding.

Alcohol becomes more stimulating during times of stress. Drugs, commonly stimulants, could make people restless throughout their day, which can cause more grinding and clenching.
